HGV Weight restriction moved to Kingfisher Drive, Covingham

HGV Weight restriction moved to Kingfisher Drive, Covingham

For the last 18 months, there has been an trial traffic regulation order applied to Merlin way to tackle the problem of HGV’s cutting through Covingham to reach places like Dorcan Industrial Estate. The 7 tonne weight limit will now be applied to Kingfisher Drive, instead of Merlin Way.

Cllr Dale Heenan, “The trial on Merlin Way has seen HGV traffic drop by a third in Covingham because lorry drivers now use the correct signposted routes off the A419, which is along Oxford Road and Dorcan Way. After an 18 month trial, a consultation was undertaken to decide if the weight restriction should become permanent, make changes to improve the scheme or drop it.

As the Cabinet Member for Transport, I have approved what I believe is a pragmatic result that still prevents HGV traffic cutting through Covingham by moving the weight limit from Merlin way to Kingfisher Drive. Local residents wanted to keep the restriction and make it permanent, but said it needed tweaking. By reviewing the original aims of the project, Kingfisher is the sensible choice and is a win, win for everyone concerned.

The suggestion of some to extend the weight restriction to Wanborough village would have rendered the weight limit unenforceable and toothless, and leave Covingham and Wanborough at the mercy of construction traffic.”
