Kevin Parry’s Handy Mag Article – March 2014
This month we have seen the long awaited new £15m Morrisons supermarket open. The feedback from residents is very positive in saying that this gives a completely new shopping experience. The store has created 221 new jobs 114 of the people to previously unemployed people. Morrisons supermarket has a fishmonger, butcher, deli, bakery, florist as well as a café. It’s great to see affordable prices with many bargains, right on the doorstep for local people. The café is also a huge success.
This was one of the last projects I was able to support in the Ward when I was a Councillor and is a shinning example of what can be achieved with hard work, determination and commitment.
£25,000 agreed for Nythe Allotments
The Conservative Cabinet of Swindon Borough Council has published plans to provide up to £25,000 for constructing the site access and parking for the future Nythe allotments off Greenbridge Road. Nythe allotments are a community led effort to see more plots available for all residents to use.
A group of residents have now set up a Committee and are working hard and making good progress and meeting regularly. They have also set up a Facebook page called ‘Nythe Allotments’.

If you are interested, please contact myself (as Chair of Governors) direct as I will be able to give you more information.
The designs for Covingham square are now complete and work is expected to start in April.
Plans for Liden centre are now being draw up and work is expected to follow shortly.
School Safety Zones for Nythe and Dorcan
School Safety Zones are set to be launched in April 2014 for Nythe/Nyland Schools and Dorcan Academy after the scheme was delayed by 12 months. The main difference local residents should see will be new 20mph flashing signs, near the school entrances in Nythe and Covingham.
Plan Approved for Radiotherapy Unit
I am pleased to say a new radiotherapy unit could open as early as 2016 at the Great Western Hospital after health bosses in Oxfordshire backed plans for a dedicated service in Swindon.
As a Governor at the Great Western Hospital, I am pleased that this is now moving forward as currently patients have to travel to Oxford. This journey can take many patients most of the day in a round trip but also adds to their ordeal. A unit in Swindon would make a massive difference to Swindon patients which is backed up by a Trust report stating that the new service would “substantially improve the patient experience” for Swindon residents.
