Have Your Say on Flood Risk in East Swindon
Cllr Dale Heenan “Swindon Borough Council is working with the Environment Agency on a new Swindon wide Flood Risk Strategy, and the draft version is now available for public consultation.
Following a change in legislation it is now a requirement for local authorities to develop this strategy. We have worked with the Environment Agency and Thames Water to provide up to date maps and highlight where the main risks are.
Previously many of the maps showing the risks were out of date, which meant there were a number of people who struggled to get insurance because they were wrongly designated to be in an area at risk.. They are completely up to date now so people can contact the Environment Agency to get the information they need
I would encourage any resident who is interested to ask questions and send in their views”
About the Local Flood Risk Management Strategy
The focus of the LFRMS is on local flooding – by that we mean flooding from surface water, groundwater, streams and ditches. This type of flooding is becoming increasingly common, but until recently no organisation has had direct responsibility for it. Following the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, Swindon Borough Council now has new powers and responsibilities for coordinating local flood risk management. The LFMRS sets out how we intend to work with our partners to tackle local flooding in the future. Importantly, it will also explain how local communities can help to protect themselves against flooding.
The LFRMS is in two parts;
- The LFRMS Summary – this gives an overview of the Strategy, including the objectives, risks and the measures that need to be taken to better manage local flooding.
- The Full LFRMS Report – this includes a detailed analysis of areas at risk of flooding.
