On Thursday night, the Conservative Cabinet agreed to consult on saving £300,000 and confirmed there will be no reduction to Library opening hours, no plans for any Library closures or make any changes to Librarian staff.

Cllr Dale Heenan, “This is good news for local residents and our local libraries like Covingham and Liden which are among the most popular and most efficient in Swindon.

The Conservatives have identified £300,000 of savings without a single Library being closed, opening hour being cut or librarian sacked. The same person you see in your Library today is the same person you’ll see tomorrow.

The reality is that last year this Conservative Council opened two Libraries, Covingham and Library, on Saturday mornings to encourage more people to use them and next year, Swindon Council will still be spending £2.6m on our great Library service.

A new Library strategy will be consulted on over the next six months which aims to preserve all libraries and find ways to keep them all open over the next three years, despite the tough financial pressure on Swindon Borough Council.”

The £300,000 savings are coming from reducing management from 3 people to 2 people, back office improvements and aspects like working with Gloucester County Council on a joint contracts saving £50,000. Swindon Borough Council will still spend £350,000 on new books and have use on other council’s book stock through inter-library loans.
