Cllr Dale Heenan wrote last month to the Flooding Minister, Richard Benyon MP, about a scheme the Government has agreed with the Insurance industry to cap the cost of Flood Insurance by Council Tax Band. He has now received a response from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs about the situation.

Cllr Dale Heenan

Cllr Dale Heenan,”When I heard about this scheme to cap Flood Insurance costs I thought great but I hope it is not all words, which is why I didn’t sit back and instead contacted the Minister in charge. I am very pleased to receive a reply from DEFRA being very clear and confirming that the Government will legislate next year to make it happen through a Water Bill. There can be no stronger intent that to introduce a law to make this happen so it is very reassuring.

This is one of those issues that rises above party politics and will help local residents to limit the amount high risk households to secure house and contents insurance. The capped amount will be based on Council Tax band.

Six families have come forward asking me to help them with their Insurance companies before the Water Bill is made law because they are all paying over £1000 a year.  If there are any other affected families, please get in touch. I cannot make any promises but I give it a damn good try”
