Parking outside Covingham School

A “Walk to School bus” from Covingham Square and Parking restrictions will be soon be implemented outside of Covingham school, with the length of the Harriers having School Keep Clear markings, and No waiting at any time will be introduced on three road corners in Terncliff.

Cllr Dale Heenan “Parking near Schools is often an uncomfortable and difficult topic to deal with.  Parking can create issues between local residents who live near a school, and parents dropping their children off by car at the School gates in the morning and parking up to wait to collect their children in the afternoon. I have heard from local residents in the Harriers, Terncliffe and Fieldfare in Covingham of the problems and conflict that occurs outside this busy and popular school caused by inconsiderate parking and behaviour by a minority. The School and Council have done everything possible to avoid it but we now need to look to a parking restriction scheme.

12 months ago Cllr Richard Hurley and I secured the funding to make a  scheme happen and since then I have been working with the Council Highways department and local residents to see if we can agree a solution that suits local residents and doesn’t adversely affect too many parents.

A recent public drop in evening in May to go through three potential options showed that there is no consensus on any possible solution for the local residents.

It has been tough, but the Council Highway officers and School Travel Advisor believe we now have a suitable compromise which is viable.

In addition, I want Swindon Borough Council to work with Covingham School to fund a Walk to School bus from Covingham Square. Instead of using the Terncliff and the Harriers for parking, the idea is to encourage parents to meet a Teacher or Teaching Assistant at the Covingham Square shops, which has ample parking, and then all the children walk together to the nearby School.

This is a big step forward, and I really hope the parking restrictions and Walk to School bus can make a difference. ”

The scheme design provided by the Highways Department of Swindon Borough Council is shown below
