Join our Solar Sound Barrier campaign!

New campaign launched in East Swindon to extend and improve the A419 Sound Barriers.

Cllr Richard Hurley, “Noise from the A419 is an issue which is regularly raised by residents when we knock on doors, but it is probably the hardest for us to do something about. Every year the A419 has more and more traffic, yet we know the Highways Agency will not fund any further work on the sound barriers which were built in 2009.”

Cllr Dale Heenan, “The idea behind this campaign is simple, lets combine solar panels with a sound barrier to build a “solar sound barrier”. The sale of the electricity generated by the solar panels could cover the cost of building and maintaining the sound barrier. A win win situation for everyone.

This approach has been successfully implemented across in France, Germany and Italy. However, it has never been built before in the UK. When I first came across the idea on holiday it made sense.

I have been laying the foundations of this campaign for the last six months to make it a reality.  We have the original Highways Agency 2009 reports, lobbied them to allow feasibility work to start, we have the DEFRA road noise maps, and received the support of both Swindon MP’s. We now need local residents and business to get behind our campaign to make it happen.

Justin Tomlinson MP, “This is a fantastic idea and it has my full support.”
