Digging for Nythe!

Cllr Dale Heenan, “I am a big supporter of residents growing their own fruit and veg, and allotments have the potential to help bring neighbours together, reduce food miles for local grown produce and it’s a great way for children to re-learn the skills of growing their own food.

In 2009, I promoted the River Cottage Landshare scheme, in 2010, tried to secure land from Thames Water. This year, Swindon Borough Council agreeing to form a new Nythe Parish has opened up new possibilities to finally secure local allotment plots.

I am pleased to say that I have now obtained agreement from the Council that we can use land near the former Oakfield Bath University Campus and the Swindon Rugby Club at Greenbridge to be partially used for local allotments!

A lot of work needs to be undertaken but this is a huge step forward for the local provision of allotment plots.

The steps required to provide the allotments are

  • Confirm site boundary, means of access and required fencing and water supply
  • Make an application for change of use
  • Grant a lease to Nythe Parish Council

I will shortly be looking for volunteers to help form a residents allotment group. I can’t claim to be the most green figured person, or know what needs to go into a new allotment site but I’m sure plenty of interested residents do. I can come up with the ideas and get things moving in the Council, but residents need to step forward and help make it happen.”
