Town Centre Christmas Market – InSwindon urged to reconsider their cancellation
Two weeks ago, the news broke that InSwindon, the town centre management firm for businesses, had cancelled the Town Centre Christmas market. The Christmas Light Switch on has been postponed to the 5th December due to the poor weather.
Dale Heenan “Absolutely nothing has changed in the last two years when the Christmas Market was held in Canal Walk without any problems, so I am certain it could have gone ahead again in the same place this year. This isn’t an area of the Council I have any responsibility for, but following a conversation on Twitter with two other Councillors, a resident and InSwindon, I decided to contact InSwindon directly asking them what was needed to make them reconsider.
Unfortunately, during a phone call with the Chief Executive of InSwindon it became apparent that it was too late for them to reconsider their cancellation of the Christmas Market. Even if I could obtain assurances from Swindon Borough Council, the market traders had committed to other places and there wasn’t any time to reorganize for the 1st December.
This weekend it has been brought to my attention by a resident of Liden that the Bath Christmas Market ends on the 9th December. With this being the case, I have again contacted InSwindon today urging them to reconsider if there is any opportunity for these traders to move to Swindon for the fortnight before Christmas.
I am not hopeful that the Christmas Market cancellation decision will be changed, but I’ll do whatever I can to support it happening. I have also put a reminder in my calendar for next August to follow this up with InSwindon for Christmas 2013 to make it doesn’t happen again.
