Stop playing games with Swindon’s heritage

Stop playing games with Swindon’s heritage

Cllr Dale Heenan, “The Locarno has been in the press quite a bit in recent weeks because of an attempt to demolish the building. The Grade II-listed Locarno and former town hall buildings have been derelict for years and there have been two arson attacks.

The owners have now confirmed that the application to demolish the Locarno is not a threat, merely an absolute last resort. The developer should stop playing games with Swindon’s Heritage and withdraw the demolition application.

Councillor’s are keen to see action on restoring this historic site, and as a member of the Planning Committee last year, I called for a design brief to be created between the Developers and the Council last year to bring forward high quality plans that are feasible. It is a shame this hasn’t happened, but if everyone is prepared to get round a table and thrash this out then if there is the will, then there is a way.

The application will receive a fair hearing if it reaches the Planning Committee, but it will be a very difficult decision to reach and it should not get that far.”
