Councillor backs ‘in or out’ EU referendum

The People’s Pledge is a cross party political campaign that seeks a referendum in the United Kingdom on the European Union. It aims to achieve this by getting voters to sign a pledge to help secure a majority of Members of Parliament (MPs) in Parliament who support an EU referendum. The 1975 European Communities membership referendum was the last time such a vote had occurred in Britain

Councillor Dale Heenan is supporting the national “in or out” referendum, and was the 100,776 person to sign up.

“I heard about this campaign from a resident over the weekend who was pleased with David Cameron’s strong line on Europe and his use of the veto before Christmas. The only vote on EU membership was before I was born, it is time we had another so I agree with the campaign.   I’m sure our excellent local Conservatives MP’s feel the same.

Talking to the resident reminded me of attending a conference in Berlin before being Councillor. I was part of a Conservative Future delegation to meet foreign political parties, and it was quite an eye opener on how Europe worked and helped form my views today. At the end, Helmut Kohl, former Chancellor of Germany, gave a speech saying he wanted to see full political, social and economic integration across the EU and immediately he received applause from across the room,  except from the UK Conservatives present. I fundamentally disagree with Kohl’s position.

Whether you want to be in the EU as it is today or not, it is right that voters should have the opportunity to decide for themselves.  That’s why I’m backing the People’s Pledge like MP’s like Boris Johnson and the campaign for a binding referendum on our EU membership, and urge other residents to show their support too.”
