Council review could stop Lorry Sat Nav directions through Covingham

Cllr Dale Heenan “The Government is giving Councils like Swindon new powers from April to deal with the way roads are classified. As a result, the Government is hosting the first ‘Satnav Summit’ in early March to thrash out solutions to end the misery caused when lorry drivers follow out of date directions from their satnavs.

All too often Lorries and hgv’s leave the main roads and cut through residential areas like Covingham, and residents often believe this is from drivers blindly following savnav directions.┬áThe proper route from the A419 is clearly sign posted as Oxford Road and Dorcan Way, yet some drivers continue to persist in using Merlin way, Kingfisher, Dorcan Way.

Local residents are rightly complaining about lorries doing this, and I would like to see a ban on lorries cutting through local residential areas.

By using these new powers from the Government effectively, it would be an important first step in solving this problem for local residents.

I raised this matter in last weeks Full Council, and a review will take place to ensure Swindon is using these important new powers effectively! I will continue to press the issue for local residents, but it must be careful done. Councils, mapping providers and satnav manufacturers must work more closely to ensure everything possible is done to make sure the right vehicles are on the right roads.”
