30/4/09 – Council to abolish travel expenses?
Following tonight’s Full Council meeting, Swindon Borough Council is to launch a review to abolish expense claims for travel within the borough.
Councillor Rod Bluh, Leader of the Council has agreed to ask the Independent Panel to abolish expense claims for traveling to meetings within the town.
Cllr Dale Heenan, “This decision is very welcome and something I have vocally advocated for 4 years. I personally don’t believe councillors should be allowed to claim mileage costs for simply turning up to a meeting.
Like the majority of hard working Councillors I have never claimed a penny
in expenses, and I don’t believe it is right for anyone to claim
money like this. It is simply staggering that a handful of people are able to claim thousands in expenses because of the system introduced by the Labour Government.
We do this job for the community and to make a different, not for the money. It is this kind of behaviour that brings politics into disrepute.
