01/07/07 – July Councillor Report

Cllr Dale HeenanSummer is upon us but the Council work continues, June has been a busy month for Phil, Glenn and I with progress on a number of issues for the ward.

Nythe No Cold Calling Zone to stop Rogue Traders

In the middle of June, Trading Standards and the Police setup a No Cold Calling Zone in Nythe. This all came about because last Summer I read about a Trial No Cold Calling Zone in Olive Grove which covered 12 houses following a spate of problems with Rogue Traders. In January and February, I picked similar complaints from residents and remembered the idea. Following discussions with the Trading Standards team, if I could find the funding they were willing to explore the idea of setting up the Zone for up to 80 houses. Nothing ever happens overnight but with some persistence a couple of months on the Zone is now in place. A lot of work has been done by the TS team in order to make this work, and we particularly welcome their efforts with the Police. A survey showed that the residents in the zone area overwhelmingly supported the idea and would welcome it, from what I hear not a single person responded negatively. Our thanks to the residents who spoke to the press because it really hit home the problem could affect anyone. More details about the Zone can be found on our website, and this certainly isn’t the end of the idea. Phil, Glenn and I hope to see the Zone expanded after it’s trial and we will be using this as something to build on with Neighbourhood Watch over the summer.

Over 300 community and volunteer groups across the Borough have been contacted so far, but to ensure that as many groups as possible know about the scheme in the Coleview, Covingham and Nythe area, a public meeting has been organised on Thursday July 12th at Coleview Community Centre. The meeting will discuss the proposed changes, the eligibility of small groups to apply for a
