21/2/07 – Cllr Glenn Smith visits Swindon Rugby Club
Last night I went down to meet the Chairman, Glyn Barrett, of the Swindon Rugby Club. Their pitches and site border the edge of the ward by Nythe.
They currently have a planning application in place to improve the lighting on the site so that they can provide more training, particularly to the juniors during the week.
Having looked at the application and now having been down to talk with them, it looks like this can only be a positive move.
Currently the existing lights do not provide enough targeted light. The new lights as outlined in the planning application, state that even though they will be on the playing field nearest the residents, the light spill from them will be less than street lights.
In addition to the lighting, they are looking to improve the drainage on the site, as more often than not they are unable to play as the playing field is water logged.
Having talked to the Club about their current and future plans, I for one would support them. They seem to do allot for very little money at the club, with a large number of Junior members.
On a Sunday morning, when they can play on the pitches, they can regularly have 1-250 juniors playing and practising.
They have been lucky to get some money from the RFU in the form of a grant and have been busy fund raising for the rest. They are almost there, but need the last
